Notes

Richard’s mother, Grace, died of influenza on January 12, 1919. His father, Clarence, died the next day of the same thing. Richard was two and a half years old when he lost both his parents.

He went to live with his maternal grandparents, Curtis Bogart (1848-1922) and Ella Burrell (1855-1941) in Belleville, Ontario. Given that Curtis was 70 and Ella was 63 when their daughter Grace died, they must have found it a real challenge to raise a toddler.

Fortunately, their other daughter was living with them, Grace’s sister and Richard’s aunt Jean Phyllis Bogart (1895-?). It’s likely that Jean, who was 25 when Richard was orphaned, shouldered much of the burden of raising him.

According to an immigration document he filled out aboard a flight to LaGuardia Airport in New York City in July of 1945, Richard was a radio range operator, 5 foot 10 inches tall, with brown hair, grey eyes, and no distinguishing marks or scars.

The Dickinsons were living in Stirling, Ontario (in Hastings county) at the time.

Margaret Lindner’s 1983 Campbell genealogy says that Richard was working as a research specialist for the Ontario government in the early 1980s.
